If your washing has started taking longer indoors as the weather cools, check the room before buying more equipment. A cooler room and moisture from the load can change the drying conditions. For UK households heading into autumn, this is a useful time to look again at ventilation and where the airer stands.

What changes in the air when temperatures drop

The core issue is how temperature affects the air’s capacity to hold moisture. Warmer air can hold more water vapour than cooler air, so as outdoor and indoor temperatures fall, the air reaches its saturation point more easily (Met Office ). If the amount of water vapour stays the same while the air cools, relative humidity rises. Adding moisture from wet washing is a separate change, so both the room temperature and the water released by the load matter.

When you hang wet laundry indoors, it adds water vapour to the room. A room that becomes cooler can have higher relative humidity even before a load is hung up. That does not mean every room becomes damp in September: heating, ventilation and other sources of moisture all differ between homes. Treat the season as a prompt to look at your room, rather than a prediction of how long a load will take.

This seasonal note applies to the UK and comparable northern temperate climates. The underlying physics of relative humidity is universal, but when these conditions occur varies by location.

Why heating is part of the problem early in the season

If you have not yet started heating a room regularly, it may be cooler than the space where you dried washing in summer. A typical household also produces a significant amount of moisture each week through ordinary activities like cooking, bathing and breathing, and laundry adds to that load.

Before replacing an airer that worked well in summer, consider what has changed around it. A different room temperature or a closed ventilation route may deserve attention first.

Ventilation matters more, not less

Give moisture a route out of the room through the ventilation available in your home. The Energy Saving Trust suggests opening windows several times a day for at least five minutes to improve ventilation (Energy Saving Trust ). Keep existing vents clear and follow the operating guidance for your home’s ventilation system.

If you use extractor fans in a bathroom or kitchen, running them for a period after activity there also helps by reducing the background moisture level before laundry adds to it. Keeping internal doors open where practical allows air to circulate and avoids moisture concentrating in one room.

Thinking about where and when you dry

Dry weather alone does not tell you how quickly a load will finish; consider the conditions and the time you have available together. Heating the room and removing moisture are different jobs. Raising the temperature does not take the water released by the washing out of the home. Pay attention to ventilation rather than treating extra heat as a complete solution.

Autumn does not require a complete rethink of your laundry routine, but it does reward a few deliberate changes. Spin laundry at the highest speed suitable for the fabric to reduce the water it carries in. Prioritise ventilation whenever clothes are drying indoors. Use outdoor drying on dry days rather than defaulting to inside. And if one room feels persistently damp after drying sessions, move the airer or improve airflow through that space.
